»Like the best DIY shows, their performances make you feel like anything could happen.« Chicago Reader
Icelandic punk trio Gróa return with their new album »Drop P«, a raucous, chaotic, and heartfelt record that perfectly captures the band’s DIY ethos and spirit; forever rooted in fun, creativity, and making music with your friends. Released on June 6th, 2025, via One Little Independent Records, »Drop P« collects nine feral and discordant anthems for the rebellious and unfiltered.
Formed in Reykjavík in their teens, Gróa is made up of sisters Karólína and Hrafnhildur Einars Maríudóttir and their childhood friend Fríða Björg Pétursdóttir. Together, they’ve carved out a sound that fuses art-punk, noise, avant-garde, and experimental rock, one that is defined by a sense of urgency and unpredictability.
Gróa were one of the founders of the egalitarian art collective Post-dreifing. Formed in late 2017, Post-dreifing is focused on creating a platform for young musicians and artists to support one another by collaborating musically and organising events. The band’s debut self-titled album was released in 2018, followed by »Í Glimmerheimi« in 2019 and »What I like to do« in 2021. These were initially released through Post-dreifing and later reissued on vinyl and CD by US label FOUND. The Grapevine Music Awards made Gróa their »Ones To Watch«. They’ve also collaborated with a host of other Icelandic artists such as Sideproject, Steinunn Eldflaug, Korter í flog, Magga stína and Joey Christ.
Gróa have become renowned for their dynamic live shows, performing at festivals like Iceland Airwaves, Pohoda and G! Festival, opening for artists like Wilco and Kælan Mikla, performing ahead of DJ sets from Pussy Riot and Björk, and touring extensively throughout Europe and the UK, as well as an Iceland Airwaves Off-Venue Show at Pianos in New York. Their performances have been praised for their communal energy with an improvisational quality, with recordings featured on KEXP. The band’s approach to music is deeply rooted in experimentation and a desire to challenge norms. Karó has even ventured into inventing and constructing her own instruments, reflecting the band’s commitment to innovation. As Karó states, »The only rule we follow is that there’s no wrong way to create.«
